When Settlers first set sight on the Estate in the early 18th Century they noted the many hills and vales and aptly named it Doolhof, which means labyrinth in Afrikaans. Today, this labyrinthine topography is put to use in the placement of our vineyards, thereby taking advantage of the many micro-climates and terroirs which are ultimately expressed in the Doolhof Estate wines.
This Merlot has a beautiful deep crimson hue. Unmistakable aromas of blackberries, cassis and ripe plums seduce the nose while also showing gentle whiffs of cedar. Full bodied and complex, this wine has a juicy mouth-feel, with mineral tones evident in the background. The palate is layered with plush fruit, dark chocolate and supported by firm tannins that lead to a luscious and persistent finish.
Gielie will be working closely with Rianie Strydom, who has been the winemaking consultant for the past two years. Gielie, who completed his studies at Elsenburg Agricultural College and worked extensively abroad, is excited and proud to be part of the Doolhof team.
“I’m looking forward to bringing my knowledge and experience to the exceptional Doolhof brand. Making a positive contribution and growing the business will be my utmost goal. I believe in team work and success that will follow if we work respectfully with nature and what we are given as a foundation. Living by this philosophy every day makes me excited about my future here at Doolhof Wine Estate.”
