Commune, Castiglione Tinella, is the home of Ca’ed Balos, where some of the very first Moscato wines were made. In the 1990s, new owners set about refurbishing the old farm with the goal of restoring it to its former glory. The original structure and style were retained, and then the facility was “modernized” with the same type of building materials utilized in its original construction.

In the vineyard, the grapevines were re-trellissed using stainless steel wires. In the cellar, ultra-modern equipment was installed to ensure that the superior fruit would be transformed into superior wine. All of that attention to detail is embodied in the 2011 Ca’ed Balos Moscato d’Asti, a benchmark Moscato made in the traditional frizzante style for which Italy is famous. Glory is a challenge to obtain, let alone reclaim. But Ca’ed Balos has managed to deliciously repeat history.

Tasting Notes: This semi-sweet sparkler offers notes of orange blossom, stone fruit, peach, almond, honey and musk.

Pairing Notes: It combines perfectly with dry pastry, meringues, biscuits and cakes. It is also perfect as an aperitif or fruit cocktail with peaches, strawberries and melon or a light summer wine. It can also accompany soft cheeses.

The Zorzal varietals are the living expression of our terroir Gualtallary Tupungato. The ancient, glaciated foothills of the Andes provide the rich minerality and drainage to receive pure mountain water. Together they produce full bodied, fresh, smooth wines which can be enjoyed at any time of the year.

After 16-24 hours of cold maceration with the skins, the juice alone is extracted at low temperature. It then rests for 3-6 days in the cold to decant the thick sediments. Fermentation takes place using the same method as for their whites: at low temperature to preserve and concentrate the aromas. When the must reaches 12 gr/lt of sugar, sulphite is added and it is cooled to halt alcoholic fermentation. The wine therefore ends up with about 7 gr/lt of residual sugar. It is then stabilized and bottled.

Tasting Notes: A deep intense red color followed by fresh, lively, but intense aromas that favor a sweet strawberry minerality. A round mouth feel on the pallet, with fine acidity and a fresh long finish.

Pairing Notes: Excellent as an aperitif. Empanadas and desserts.

15-year-old Tall Espaliers located in Gualtallary, Tupungato, 1,350 meters above sea-level. The soil contains mixture of stones and sand. In this area they have temperature swings between day and night at the time of year when the grapes are ripening.

Tasting Notes: A deep intense red color characterizes this complex and deep wine. A little mineral, floral, chocolate, and licorice aromas intrigue the nose. While on the pallet persistence in the mouth, great structure, round tannins, and a large, long finish prevail.

Pairing Notes: Ideal to enjoy with red meat, spicy Mexican food, Italian food (especially with tomato based sauces), barbecue, chilli, and sausage.

A word about a special wine made by Ron Gault & Charlayne Hunter Gault…

“Our passages through life have been often serendipitous, many times sweet, and always soul-satisfying. We have drunk from the waters and the wines of the world, settling in South Africa, where its people have enhanced our taste for all things good. Our wine, Passages, speaks to our embrace of new people, places and things, and our desire to share the joy of our ongoing journey to the horizons”.

The grapes are sourced from the Stellenbosch region in the Western Cape. This is an area known for it’s fruit and winemaking. This coastal region in the Western Cape is ideal for grape growing and is singled out perennially for the quality of it’s fruit.

Ernst Gouws is the wine maker. He comes from a winemaking tradition and is highly respected for his wine making skills. His red and white wine have won numerous awards on the International wine stage.

Tasting Notes: A cross between Pinot Noir and Hermitage developed in 1925, this uniquely South African wine is celebrated worldwide for the distinctively rich ruby color, bold aromas of dark chocolate, stewed fruit and spice. The Passages Pinotage offers juicy plum and cherry fruit carried by silky tannins over a backing of integrated oak.

Pairing Notes: This wine goes well with anything Cajun. It is especially tasty paired with BBQ, lamb, and pork chops.

This is not a label that lives in the shadow of the flagship Morgenster; on the contrary it has a style and flair all of its own. This statement is no truer than in the 2005 vintage where this elegant, accessible and yet complex wine truly shows its temperament. The totally uncompromising and almost obsessive focus on quality means that the grapes that meet the stringent standards are a direct reflection of Morgenster’s terroir.

Tasting Notes:
COLOR: Concentrated and vibrant; dark mulberry red
NOSE: This wine carries a subtle perfume of wild flowers, sub-tropical fruit, cinnamon and vanilla oak spice
PALATE: The palate senses black currants, licorice and spice, a freshly integrated, balanced acid and tannin ratio with youthful expression. The tannins have a firm grip that show the long path of evolution ahead, but they are certainly neither clawy nor aggressive.

Pairing Notes:Anything smokey goes with Lourens River Valley 2005 – Smoked Salmon, a grilled side of bacon and of course ribs. Try it with grilled Tuna, rabbit and any dish that combines chicken and bacon.

Tasting Notes: Garnet cherry with deep red hues, coppery edge. The nose breathes leather, tobacco, berry fruit and spice, while the palate offers evolved, top-tier plum and cherry flavours, with a bit and splendid acidity; well-integrated woody, bushy hints. Long, slightly bitter finish.

Pairing Notes: This pristine red blend pairs exceptionally well with red meat, grilled meat, ribs, and spicy courses.
